ALP National Conference 2004

Planning for the 2004 Conference, commenced late in 2003. The 2004 National Conference was a opportunity to present a new leader to the public, in what would also be an election year.

The challenge was to replicate the "paperless" Conference of 2000, with substantially reduced funding and no technology partners like Unisys or Microsoft. The challenge was met and the results exceeded all expectations.

An Amendments and Resolution Tracking System (AARTS) was built to run on the FreeBSD servers taken to the Sydney Convention Centre for the Conference. The application was built using what were to become the building blocks of the ALP's Internet Service Centre. This Intranet system used Open Source software such as Apache, MySQL and PHP. Selected Conference delegates accessed the application via a web browser on a workstation in the Conference hall. A wireless network also allowed delegates in the audience to access the Intranet.

The delegate workstations ran a compact Slackware Linux distribution which opened a relatively unknown lightweight browser, which tekniche had been using when it was called Phoenix - hence the 2004 Highlight icon.

We know a good idea when we see it and now it appears so does the rest of the world. Phoenix briefly became Firebird and finally settled on Firefox. The rest, as they say is history.

The 2004 Conference featured much more interesting technology than is discussed here. The Business Observers Centre had workstations as usual, but also a wireless network that allowed access to both the Conference Intranet and the wider Internet in and around the Conference area. Authentication was via NoCat.

The team, in alphabetically order, that made all this happen, included:

Peter Cherny, Dylan Perry and Kim Richardson.
