ALP National Conference 2000The 2000 Conference was held at Wrest Point Hotel Casino Conference Centre in Hobart. Previous ALP Conferences had been held here in 1994 and 1998. The principal of tekniche, Dr Dennis Perry, was responsible for planning and implementing the ICT requirements for these three ALP Conferences. At the 1994 Conference a small PC network was developed to allow Platform amendments to be created and stored electronically, and several PCs and modem points were installed for the Business Observer's Centre (BOC). A single PC with a modem connection was installed for delegates to observe the prototype ALP home page and "surf" the net. In 1994, Barry Jones was one of the few delegates who understood the significance of this new technology. In 1998 the Conference administrative network had an ISDN connection to the Internet and the entire conference was webcast in Real Audio, with the last day featuring video as well as audio. By the 2000 ALP Conference, Dr Jones the outgoing National President, had presided over the world's first "paperless" conference. The BOC now featured several PCs, all networked to printers and the Internet. In 2000, the entire conference was webcast in both Media Player and Real Audio streams with full video and audio streams. The ALP web page was updated at the Conference with delegate of the day photographs and the like. However, the technical triumph was the Conference floor and the use of a conference intranet to remove the need for massive quantities of paper amendments. At last the photocopiers were silenced, a world first, a "paperless" conference.
